A group of high school students from Poland, Spain and Portugal visited Pratt & Whitney in Rzeszów as part of the Learn & Fly Challenge, an international competition designed to improve students’ STEM skills.
The visit to Pratt & Whitney and other aerospace companies in the region was timed to coincide with the final phase of the competition and the Regional Science Festival organized by the Foundation of Educational Support in Poland’s Aviation Valley.
The Learn & Fly Challenge launched in November 2017 with three key elements:
- A STEM toolkit for teachers.
- A careers toolkit for parents, educators and professionals.
- The challenge, in which teams of students build an airplane.
Each of the three partner countries hosted a national-level competition, with the top teams advancing to the international finals in Poland. Teams were tasked with building and testing an airplane from basic materials, and reporting on their results. More than 120 students participated in the final round of the challenge.
The Learn & Fly Challenge was designed to address underachievement in science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills. Innovative activities are designed to encourage students’ interest in aeronautics and engage them in practical engineering tasks. The program also provides concrete information about education, training and career paths in STEM-related fields.
Pratt & Whitney supports STEM education worldwide, inspiring future leaders in science, technology, engineering and math. Click here to learn more about the key STEM-related organizations that are developing the engineers, scientists and manufacturers of the future.
